What is radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that results from the decay of uranium found in trace amounts in soil, rock and water.

Radon is the main source of our exposure to all radiation.

In fact, 55% of all the radiation we’re exposed to comes from radon gas.

Why test for radon?

Outdoor radon is not a threat, but radon gas can enter into homes or other buildings and accumulate to dangerous levels.

Exposures to high levels of radon ofer a long time period can pose a serious health risk.

The Surgeon General and the EPA have determined that radon is second only to smoking as a leading cause of lung cancer.

How do I know if radon is in our home?

You cannot see, smell, or taste radon. The only way to know if a home or structure has radon is to conduct a test.

Any home can have a radon problem–new homes or old homes–drafty homes or well-insulated homes–homes with or without basements.

Elevated levels of radon have been known to occur in Ohio.

How much radon is too much?

Because radon is radioactive, there is no “safe” level. Exposure to any concentration will pose some risk. Radon in air is measured in picoCuries per liter (pCi/L).

The EPA estimates that the average outdoor radon concentration is 0.4 pCi/L, and the average indoor concentration is 1.3 pCi/L.

What if we discover elevated concentrations of radon?

The EPA recommends corrective action to be taken when indoor levels reach 4.0 pCi/L.

In most cases, it is easy to diagnose the problem and permanently reduce the radon levels in the home at an affordable cost.
